Wireless Quality Monitoring

This is a project to monitor the quality of the wireless service provided by Eduroam at the the University of Southampton. It does not focus on signal strength or noise, rather network behaviour that may prevent a client from retaining an uninterrupted network connection over many hours.

As part of this work, we have developed some software [1] which generates statistics about the network it is connected to across the following metrics:

  • Packet loss
  • Latency
  • IPv6 multicast for neighbor discovery disappearance/multiplication
  • Disappearance of IPv4 default gateways
  • VLAN/Subnet allocation determination

This in turn is connected to a central monitoring aggregator.

The work carried out under this project has significantly improved the quality of the Student Eduroam at the University of Southampton, and is now turning its attention towards analysing a loss of DHCP and router advertisements on the Eduroam subnets (both staff and student).
