Sown-vpn2 is SOWN's development VPN server.

It has a 3GHz Intel Xeon E3110 processor with 2GiB2,048 MiB

The server has a power consumption of 93W at boot, 71W idle and 12W when turned off.

It was purchased in the summer of 2009.

Installed Software

The server's operating system is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS running on Linux Kernel 4.4.0-xx-generic (x86_64).

This server is connected to the SOWN VLAN, with the IP addresses:

  • 10.5.0.235
  • 2001:630:d0:f700::235

Its DNS name is:

  • vpn2.sown.org.uk

Its MAC address is 00:22:19:d6:67:ea on its eno1 interface and is connected to port b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/7 with a white network cable.


This server is also allocated a IP address from SOWN's public IP address block with the IP address:

  • 152.78.189.160

Its DNS name is:

  • sown-vpn2.ecs.soton.ac.uk

A virtual interface eno1:1 was created for this IP address and therefore its MAC address is the same (i.e. 00:22:19:d6:67:ea) and is connected to the same switch port (i.e. b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/7).


The WakeOnLAN capability of this server is supported on eno1 but not enabled.
