vms.sown.org.uk is SOWN's Virtual Machine Server (VMS).

It has an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz processor with 32GiB32,768 MiB
33,554,432 KiB
0.0313 TiB
of memory. It has a 2TiB2,048 GiB
2,097,152 MiB
2,147,483,648 KiB
RAID 1 array comprising 2 x 2TiB hard drives]] and it has 4 x Gigabit network interfaces. It is housed within a 2U Dell R730 case located on 32/3089 (50° 56' 11", -1° 23' 45").

It was purchased in the July 2015.

Network

This server is connected to the SOWN VLAN, with the IP addresses:

  • 10.5.0.237
  • 2001:630:d0:f700::237

Its DNS name is:

  • vms.sown.org.uk
  • sown-vms.sown.org.uk

Its MAC address is 44:a8:42:29:dc:0c on its em1 interface and is connected to port b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/11 with a white network cable.

Provisoned Services

  • Virtual machine host
  • Virtual machine web administration

This server is also allocated a IP address from SOWN's public IP address block with the IP address:

  • 152.78.103.162

Its DNS name is:

  • sown-vms.ecs.soton.ac.uk

A virtual interface em1:1 was created for this IP address and therefore its MAC address is the same (i.e. 44:a8:42:29:dc:0c) and is connected to the same switch port (i.e. b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/13).

This server has its DRAC connected over IPMI with the IP address:

  • 10.5.0.187

It has the DNS name: Its MAC address is 44:a8:42:29:dc:0c on its idrac interface and connected to port sownport::b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/11 with a white network cable. The DNS name for its DRAC is:

  • vms-ipmi.sown.org.uk

This server is also connected to again on the SOWN VLAN for bridging VMs onto the SOWN network. As there are quite a few VMs to give them a sufficient amount of bandwidth LACP has been used to create a port channel for interfaces em2 em3 and em4 (using just MAC address 44:a8:42:29:dc:0d and connected to switchports b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/10, b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/11 and b32-l3-sown/GigabitEthernet1/0/12 with a white cables) onto the bond0 bonded interface, which has a potential maximum bandwidth of 3Gb/s. Further, the bond0 interface is bridged onto the bridge interface br0 so all the guest VMs can used this 3Gb/s link to send and receive data over the network.

The WakeOnLAN capability of this server is supported on em1 but not enabled.

Installed Software

The server's operating system is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS running on Linux Kernel 4.4.0-xx-generic (x86_64).

The server also has the following software installed on it:
