IPTables is a user-space application program that allows a system administrator to configure the tables[clarification needed] provided by the Linux kernel firewall.
SOWN uses IPTables on two servers. On sown-gw this ensure that those using a University of Southampton provided Internet connection are restricted from BitTorrenting and other prohibited activities and nsure there do not have a connection to the Internet until they are fully authenticated. Since the move to 802.1x (e.g. Eduroam) authentication, the latter is no longer required. On sown-auth2 IPTables is used to pick up the ECS's network monitoring is still pinging the server, so that via SyslogNG we can generate an Icinga alert if it is not.
