Below are the terms and conditions for loan of a SOWN[at]HOME node. A PDF of the SOWN(at)HOME Node Loan Agreement is also available.
SOWN[at]HOME Node Loan Agreement
Henceforth the following terms are defined thus:
- SOWN: The Southampton Open Wireless Network. A research project within the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton and the organisation responsible for the SOWN[at]HOME nodes.
- Node: A SOWN[at]HOME node. A customized Meraki Mini access point flashed with SOWN's bespoke firmware.
- Member of the university: A current student or staff member of the University of Southampton.
- Host: A person who will host a node in their place or residence.
- Users: People who use the SOWN network to access the Internet or use any other services provided by the SOWN network.
SOWN promises:
- To provide the host with a node that they can deploy in their place of residence.
- To provide the host with assistance setting up their node if necessary.
- To help the host in regulating the bandwidth that their node uses on their ADSL connection, so as to not impinge significantly on the bandwidth that other devices on that ADSL connection receive.
- To promptly assist the host if the node develops a fault.
- Any logs of a host's node activity that contains private data will only be accessible to members of the SOWN committee.
The Host promises:
- They are a member of the university and if they cease to be so they will return their node to SOWN immediately.
- They will return their node to SOWN on or before the loan expiry date specified below.
- To make their node continuously available to users or inform SOWN of any planned outages greater than 48 hours. SOWN may otherwise request that the node be returned immediately.
- They will return the node to SOWN in a complete and unbroken state or otherwise be liable to to reimburse SOWN up to £25, unless an acceptable reason can be provided.
- They will not re-flash the node or attempt to change the firmware without the express permission of SOWN.
- That the node will be hosted in the address specified below and that address is their place of residence.
- There is an ADSL connection installed in the address specified below and that they have permission to connect a node to it. (N.B. This may require altering the configuration of the Internet connection).
- To place their node in or near a window where it will provide the best coverage to users in the surrounding area.
