We already have an IRC channel however many users will not know how to connect to it. In addition it is more for technical discussions than for general chat.
You can call random SOWN users and chat to them. Could be expanded but do people want to have random SOWN users ring them?
Like MSN/ICQ/Yahoo Messenger/AIM. Allows people to talk to other Jabber users like VoIP but with text. Some Jabber servers can queue up messages if you are not online. Can also interface with other IM networks like MSN ICQ and AIM. Can be used to create group chat channels.
